Campfire #1: Windows 8 [Webinar 45min]

Mertech’s first Campfire was a great success! Many people attended, and we saw some great participation. Below are some of the questions and issues that were discussed.

The group discussed the different “flavors” of Windows 8, and whether it makes sense to upgrade now or even to buy a Windows 8 laptop at this time, given the many issues that the new release seems to have. The group also discussed some of the new, innovative concepts introduced by Windows 8, such as Microsoft’s walled garden, the ongoing tablet vs. desktop paradigm, replacement of BIOS by UEFI, Windows-to-go, which provides true cross-device portability for certain customers, and a new task manager.

Some participants suggested some helpful third party apps such as “Start 8”, which allows users to go back to the old interface. One participant highlighted a little-known way to get to a helpful back-end menu by pressing “Windows Key X” or by right-clicking on the Start button.

Other participants brought up problems they have found when dealing with Windows 8. First, it is not possible to install SQL Server 2005 on Win 8, although the 2008 version is possible in compatibility mode. Microsoft really tries to push users to the latest versions. In fact, it is now nearly impossible to buy a laptop with Windows 7. In addition, some people seem to have issues with specific apps not loading.

Overall, this seems to not be a perfect release, which provides even more indication that Microsoft has gotten trapped in between supporting their legacy systems and keeping up with Apple and the rest of the tablet market. If this new interface does become popular, how will it ultimately affect VDF development? Only time will tell.

We look forward to the Mertech community’s participation in future Campfires!
